Your First Steps to Fighting Cataracts

$86 CATARACT ASSESSMENT
IN SINGAPORE

Cataract is the world’s leading cause of blindness
by the World Health Organization.

Cataracts occur when there is a build-up of protein in the lens, making it cloudy. This prevents light from passing clearly through the lens, causing some loss of vision. It affects daily activities and the ability to drive or read. To improve your quality of life, make an appointment with us and put your mind at ease.

Symptoms of Cataracts

Blurred vision
Blurring of vision is the commonest symptom of cataracts which gets worse with time as less light reaches the retina.

Glares
It can be difficult for a person with cataracts to see in bright sunlight. Indoor lights may begin to seem too bright, or they may appear to have haloes around them.

Colour changes
Cataracts also affect colour vision; some colours may appear faded and objects may acquire a brownish or yellowish tint.

Double vision
Cataracts may result in patients seeing double images.

Types of Cataracts

Nuclear cataract
Associated with ageing, and forms deep in the nucleus (centre) of the lens.

Posterior sub-capsular cataract
Associated with people who have diabetes or those who take high doses of steroids. It forms at the back of the lens.

Cortical cataract
This occurs in the lens cortex and is characterised by peripheral clouding which works its way towards the centre of the lens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most cataracts develop slowly over time and affect people over the age of 50. About half of the population has cataracts by age 65. In rare cases, infants can have congenital cataracts. These usually are related to the mother having measles, chicken pox, or other infectious disease during pregnancy, but sometimes they are inherited.

If you have cataracts in both eyes, surgery is typically performed on one eye first followed by the second eye a few days or weeks later. This approach allows the first eye to recover and vision in that eye to stabilise before surgery is performed on the other eye.

A cataract usually starts with mild symptoms and may be unnoticeable to the patient at first. With time, it grows larger and cloudier. The time to consider cataract surgery may arise when the vision worsens to the point where performing daily tasks becomes a challenge (e.g. driving, working, sports or reading).

At this time – and for the foreseeable future – cataract surgery is the only viable treatment for visually significant cataracts.
